Wood Fence Designs: When Form is the Main Consideration Pick out the type of wood fence that would best complement the style and make of your home as well as the general landscaping design that it has. Here are the basic wood fence designs and the house styles where they would have the most appeal: Picket-style fence. This type of fencing provides quaint charm most suitable for cottage-style homes and those with landscape designs leaning towards English garden themes. Picket-style fencing also comes in a variety of types of which the most popular are dog-ear spaced picket, French gothic spaced picket, and the pointed top spaced picket. Split-rail wood fence. Perfect for a country feel, ranch-style homes and those with landscaping inspired by the Southwestern US design should find a good fit with the split-rail wood fencing. The best material for the split-rail style is the Western red cedar wood. Log wood fence. This style showcases the true beauty of wood and best matches houses designed with a rustic theme. While most are installed as vertical panels, horizontals log panels are also not uncommon.
While the installation of these fencing options may sound basic enough, they can be rather tricky, so ensure you have some understanding of DIY before you begin. The first step is placing one of these items around your home is to choose where to place your first post. This will be in the corner of the property or against the house, depending where you want to start the fencing. It is here where you will have to dig your first post hole. Ensure you have good soil hardness, as it needs to be durable enough to hold the fence in all weather conditions. Dig a deep enough post hole, paying attention to the depth compared to the height of the item. Once you put the first post into place, you will want to ensure it is plumb using a spirit level before you start filling the hole. Compact the soil as you fill, constantly double checking the post is still plumb until the hole is completely filled. The next step is then to use a mason line for the length of the fence to the next post, this will help you ensure you place the pole at the right height and at the right angle. Do the same again until you have completed all the posts needed. Next take the first panel of fencing and slot into place, ensuring it is completely level before screwing it into place.
Of the three types of wood I mentioned above, treated pine is the most popular material for building wood privacy fences. This is because it cost less than other types of wood and will last a long time when it’s exposed to the outdoor weather. A lot of people choose to go with cedar when building their fence because of the red color and how it holds up to the weather. What most people don’t realize is that after a couple years, you can’t hardly tell the difference between a pine fence and a cedar fence. They both turn to a grayish color and last around the same amount of time. The main difference between the two is the price of cedar is much higher. Cypress probably last the longest out of the three, but it can sometimes be hard to find, and it costs more than pine.
There are some fencing that will be better in certain areas. Cedar fencing is something that is used quite frequently because it is very durable. Every homeowner can choose what they want and need though. White is a very common color for many types of fencing. These are easy to repaint if necessary. It does not fade with the sun shining on it all day every day either. This can make it difficult to match colors to touch up certain spots of the fence. Another nice thing about white is that it can be repainted over easily if someone chooses to change the color of their fence. The white is not going to show through the other color like a darker color can. It can depend on the color that is used whether or not it is easy to paint over the top of it or not though.
